Introduction

I have many years of experience working in software development as a team lead, information architect, and technical writer; most recently on agile projects. I have developed a number of MySQL / PHP websites, made documentation improvements using web analytics, done lots of search engine optimization (SEO) work, been involved in various aspects of the semantic web using RDF, have years of experience with online geotagging, coded my own photoblog with more than 1,360 unique photos since August 2004.

I've expanded on those details below, but if all you really want is to send me an e-mail, I'm at david.s.toronto@gmail.com and I'd be happy to connect on LinkedIn at https://ca.linkedin.com/in/davidsky

Let's connect through social media.

Here's a list of the social media sites I use on a regular basis. Lets connect!

I've been using Twitter since May 2008 - you'll find photos, links to some of my Goodreads reviews, thoughts on the latest technology I'm learning all about, and who knows what else. Have a look at:

Google+

I spend more time reading Google+ than I do adding posts. There are lots of good Google+ Communities, and a few MOOCs that I've taken have made use of Google+. If you're interested, please connect with me at:

Portfolio

I've been involved in a range of projects, here are some of the latest:

AGO staircase in Walker court

seemsArtless

I've been running a photoblog since August 2004 and currently have more than 1,360 unique photos online. I wrote the blogging software myself from scratch, using MySQL and PHP, then created a custom geo-tagging system to keep track of where my photos are located around Toronto. You can find all the details on the seemsArtless archive page

Instagram

Instagram

I also have an Instagram account - and no, I didn't write this one from scratch - I have lots of photos from around Toronto, vacation pics, photos from up north near the cottage on Georgian Bay... a pretty typical feed, with zero cats, and maybe just one or two photos of food. Check out my photos at at: @outsidenow on Instagram.

Old car on the Bruce Trail

@Outsidenow Twitter

I decided to start a second Twitter account to focus on the historic Toronto photos, as well as hiking and biking, the ravines and greenspace in Toronto, etc.... I often use the following Twitter hastags on my posts: #TOhistory, #OTD (on this date), and #bikeTO Let's connect at: @outsidenow on Twitter.

Fog along the beltline

Wholemap

When I started geo-tagging my photos, I realized it would be interesting to see what other photos there were in the same place... so I coded up a basic geo-tagging page and added a range of popular Toronto neighbourhoods, along with a few other towns in Ontario. Take a look at Popular tourist areas defined in Wholemap

Don Valley Brickworks

Historic Photos

I've since expanded the map to include many interesting historic Toronto photos, categorized by date, location, subject, etc... We now have more than 2,000 photos from the City of Toronto Archives, the Archives of Ontario Visual Database, the Toronto Library, and more. Start with: historic Toronto photos from today

Perl code

Env Canada Perl object

Once I added "Where?" and "When?" information to the historic Toronto photos, the next obvious question was "What was the weather like that day?" I coded up a Perl object to read the Environment Canada historic weather for a given date to load that info into my database. I shared the Perl Object on GitHub, too!

Bruce Trail hikes

Brucetrail Hikes

One of my favourite places outside of Toronto is the Bruce Trail - I put together a simple set of web pages to share the hikes that I really enjoyed. I've since expanded the page to include other hikes around Toronto, Barrie, and Napanee. Currently I have 16 hikes described. You can see the list at: my Bruce Trail hikes page
